I got my Xperia Z1 Compact at the beginning of February and I am glad to have my old Xperia ray replaced by the fast and dressy Z1 Compact.

Unfortunately I am suffering from an issue that is well known by many Xperia Z1 and Z1s users. The touchscreen of the phone looses randomly the touch state which leads to bad words during Swype input and unintentional zooming and clicking during internet browsing.

It seems to me the issue appears totally at random and is not so distinct as it is seen on the two other phone models I mentioned above. The touch is lost occasional and more infrequent.

The facts I encountered so far:
- The issue is not restricted to the lower part of the screen but it occurs more often on the lower part where the keyboard is located in portrait mode.
- It doesn't matter weather I touch the aluminium frame or not.
- long touch strokes will end most of the time after about fifteen to thirty seconds
- short strokes loose touch directly after the beginning
- It doesn't matter weather the phone is hot or not.
- It doesn't matter weather there is heavy CPU load during touching
- The issue can be reproduced using the Xperia phone which is pre-installed on the Z1 Compact phone. You have to repeat the touchscreen test sometimes up to five times to see the error, sometimes it happens successively.

I wait for the upcoming firmware update .142, currently there is .114 installed. No other update is available yet here in Germany. If the issue exists after the update I will return the phone and take a look at other brands - sorry Sony!

Prao

Hello Manjuboyz,

thank you for your answer. The problem exists from the beginning on and is not restricted to the Swype keyboard. I have tested with stock keyboard and Swype and Swift.

It is not restricted to text input but the error is very annoying during text input because there many small input strokes are done.

As I mentioned, the error can also be seen in the Xperia diagnostics in phone settings.

Prao

Has anybody noticed problems during text input with the stock keyboard using swype to enter text?

Can somebody try the touchscreen diagnostics with his Xperia Z1 Compact phone? The diagnostics can be entered in the Phone "Settings" through the option "About the phone". Please repeat the touchscreen test at least ten times and use the whole screen and check if the line keeps visible until the test finishes after ten seconds. That would be very helpful for me, thank you.

Now its not possible to stop alarm in the morning by draging over the stop region because it doesn't react...

She has to lock the screen again, stroke over the screen with her hand, activate again and then to 70% it's possible to stop the alarm...

And it's even there after the update to Android 4.4 (like expected...)

Just got my phone again back from repair. The software has been updated to android 4.4.2 Kitkat.

The issue still exists.

I posted a video on YouTube, just search for "Xperia Z1C touchscreen issue Kitkat" on YouTube.

The problem now only occurs if I don't touch the aluminum frame of the phone. Then the corners of the touchscreen are the areas where the input is suddenly no line being recognised. Even raising the finger away from the screen doesn't help anymore. I have to wait some seconds until new touches are recognised.

I returned my Xperia z1 compact yesterday and got my money back.

Together with the department leader of the store we unpacked a brand new phone and tested it with the pre-installed app "Sketch". The new phone is also affected by the touchscreen problem. This leads me to the conclusion that all phones are affected, most users won't realize the issue since they don't use swype as the favorite input method.

If you want to check whether your phone is affected, just open the pre-installed app "sketch" and give it a try. Start drawing spirals or snakes and watch the stroke. Sometimes it happens that the stroke is interrupted, which exactly is the error the defective touchscreen produces. You will probably have to test multiple times in a row until the strokes are interrupted, just try ten times in a row, use the undo button in the app to clear the sketch.

Yes, I call this an error because no other phone I had before had a similar issue and it's extremely annoying when dragging during text input or scrolling.

Here are some images, how the sketches will look like:

I tried the tests as Prao suggests many times over the last couple days, and never once saw an interrupted stroke.

I got a new Z1C because of the touchscreen issue. But the new one also losses the touch time by time (testet in service-menu), but i think, now it is less often.

Sony, do you know this issue? T-Mobile Germany already knows it (they told me, when I got my second z1 compact)... so it would be very curious, if you haven't heard of it yet...
