I recently tried to play a movie "Short Term 12" which is in MP4 format but it said "cannot play movie". I then transferred it to my partners phone "Samsung Note2" and it played just fine. Clearly my phone needs to be upgraded to play. Can anyone help?

Xperia SP supports the following decoder and file format by default:

You'll find information about this in the whitepaper:

http://www-support-downloads.sonymobile.com/c5302/whitepaper_EN_C5302_C5303_C5306_xperia_sp_3.pdf

But as suggested above, you can use 3rd party video player that may have support for other decoder and file format.
