The new Z1 Compact does not have speed dial!!! Why? Was at MWC in BARCELONA and the Sony staff were as surprised as I was.

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

There is no speed dial as default in Xperia Z1 compact. What you can do instead is to add contacts as favorite, so you can find them quickly through the favorites tab under contacts. You can also create direct dial shortcuts on the homscreen. Press and hold your finger on an empty space on the homescreen > apps > shortcuts > direct dial > select a contact/number.

Perhaps you can find a 3rd party dialer on Google Play that have the speed dial option you are looking for.

speed dial is an out of date concept that belongs on the era prior to adaptable touch screens. it simply isn't intuitive to remember an arbitrary number rather than selecting the actual name of the person you want.

smart dialling is supported and is still useful though for quick lookups.

Frankly I disagree with this strategy as do our subscribers. Speed Dial was one of the first features on mobile phones, way before SMS.

Many subscribers have maintained the same speed dial numbers over the years and wish to continue this.

The failure of your explanation is that with Favourites you choose a contact not a number as you do in speed dial. This necessitates the user to further choose which particular number for the contact you want to dial. An added step and waste of time.

Remember, your competitors have not taken this decision and in fact neither have you on the Z1 and the customers assume the Z1 Compact to be the same as the Z1 but only smaller.

Think again please.

As far as I know there is no speed dial option by default in Xperia Z1 either.

I understand that with favorites, you get extra steps to perform a call, that's why I recommended the 'direct dial' feature.

"You can also create direct dial shortcuts on the homescreen. Press and hold your finger on an empty space on the homescreen > apps > shortcuts > direct dial > select a contact/number. "

With direct dial you get a shortcut on the homescreen where you call a specific number with one tap on the screen. If you want to add more than one direct dial shortcuts, you can create a folder where you have all your direct dial shortcuts.

I have to agree with Alexander here, JTHZA.

Some people still like Speed dial but there are alternative for our modern phones that are vastly superior and easily adaptable...

I ditched speed dial with my last BlackBerry phone just before I move on to Android... and years later, with an Xperia I still prefer Direct Dial Shortcuts (and some Full Contact Shortcuts) over speed dial.

The change to this is really simple and the adaptation is fast.

I really miss my S3 where I could specify say the landline as the default and then just slide my finger right over the contact entry to dial the number and slide my finger left to send an SMS to the mobile number.

So simple, elegant and efficient...
