What are launchers?

will they speed my phones preformance?

The launcher is the home application in the phone. It's the home menu itself which shows you apps, widgets, shortcuts and so on. So when you unlock the screen and see your wallpaper, widgets and apps you're looking at the launcher.

My personal experience is that our launcher that's preinstalled is very responsive and has great performance but you might find other launchers that are more minimal and lightweight on Google Play.

so if i install a another launcher will the preinstalled one will be closed?

in the running app section xperia home is running, shouldnt it close...?
