Z1 Microphone not working properly

I have a brand new Sony Z1 which is mostly excellent, but unfortunately has one problem - the microphone does not appear to work properly. For sound recordings using any voice recorder app, or within a video recording using the provided camera app, the quality of the sound recorded is very poor. It is weak and faint.

However the microphone does work when using it to make phone calls – it’s all other uses that have a problem.

I have tested it using the built in diagnostic function under ‘About Phone’ and the problem is there too. It seems the main microphone is just not being switched on. The limited sound I do record appears to be picked up by the rear (noise cancelling) microphone only.

This feels like a software problem, but I haven’t seen any other reported incidents. I am on Android 4.3, build number 14.2.A.0.290.

Any suggestions – or should I return it to Vodafone for a replacement?

Sony please solve this problem i have to use a awfull bluetooth of nokia to avoid bad quality calls do u want that to happen. M ready to roll back android version will dat solve it

No, there's no answers from Sony, they've decided to ignore the problem. Just keep sending in for repairs, let them eat the cost.
