usb connection problem

i tried connecting my xperia j to my laptop via usb, the charging light comes on on the phone but the connection option screen does not come up on the phone and the usb is not regstering on the laptop, i tried connecting a mp3player via the usb and it picked that up but not my phone, i have done a factory re set on my phone but still had no luck can anyone help

Has it worked before? is it windows 8? is it a 2.0 or 3.0 usb port?

yea it worked before but a notice come up on my phone about problems with the memory card not being supported so i had to re format it and its not worked since then its windows 8 how do i find out what usb it is

well i used other cables that work with my phone..and i always had connection issues..i can only get a solid and non twitchy connection when i use the sony usb cable that came with the phone.
