Thank you for your reply. I've tried this (on both programs) and have encountered another problem. When it comes to preparing the phone for the update, I follow the instructions exactly (turn phone off, wait, hold volume down and connect USB at same time) and absolutely nothing happens - it can't move on to the next stage. What am I doing wrong?

I was using my phone earlier this evening to skype, when it ran out of battery. I plugged it in to charge and switched it on and error messages keep flashing up,saying "Unfortunately....has stopped." Basically every app that is on my phone seems to have stopped. I can't do anything on my phone because these messages are flashing up stopping me from clicking on anything else. I've tried switching it off and back on again, removing the battery and SIM and I've tried a different SIM card. I've googled the problem and it suggests doing a factory reset but I can't do this. the error messages don't stop flashing up long enough to allow me to get to my settings menu to do this, for some reason pressing the volume up key and the power button doesn't have any effect whatsoever on my phone (despite info on the internet saying that is should reset the phone) and the Sony PC Companion doesn't seem to offer an option for factory reset.. Does anyone have any other suggestions?! Thank you in advance!

Thank you! I didn't end up trying this as I managed to get onto the settings menu on my phone and do a factory reset in between all the error messages, which fixed the problem. I'll remember your advice for next time I want to do a system update!
