Just wanted to share my experience. I've been reading these and the xda-developers forum a lot recently.

I received my Z1 Compact a few weeks ago and was extremely happy with it. All the review were right, it's an excellent phone.

One morning I found a fairly deep scratch on the front. I emailed Sony - conversation below.

Summary: Sony support have had official communication that removing the ASF does not void the warranty.

TO:SONY

Dear Sir/Madam,

I received my Z1 Compact on the 24 of February from Clove Technology.

On 9th March, I discovered a deep scratch on the screen. I have no idea how this has occurred since I have only had it in my pocket or on a desk and it has not been dropped. It has not come close to anything sharp enough to cause such a scratch.

After owning an iPhone for over three years and never having a scratch, I find it unbelievable that after two weeks of owning a phone that cost me £400, I now have an ugly scratch that spoils the whole premium look that I bought the phone for. I was under the impression that the front glass was made from durable tempered glass, like that of the iPhone. This scratch shows that isn't true and has not performed as advertised. If I had known it was of poor quality, I would have used a screen protector. Even though it would spoil the look and feel, at least I would be able to replace it when scratches appeared.

I am very disappointed in Sony. The Sale of Goods Act 1979 makes it an implied term of the contract that goods be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. As you are in breach of contract I am entitled to have the phone repaired or replaced and I would request that you confirm that you will do this within the next seven days.

I also require you to confirm whether you will arrange for the phone to be collected or will reimburse me for the cost of returning it. I am in London, so I can deliver it to you if convenient.

I look forward to receiving your satisfactory proposals for settlement of my claim within seven days of the date of this letter.

Yours faithfully,

-----

FROM: SONY

Dear ****,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.

We are very sorry to hear of the issues that you have been experiencing with your Sony Xperia Z1 Compact having a scratch on the display.

All of our handsets have a 24 month repair warranty in place on them which covers them for any faults that occur due to a mnaufacturing fault. Therefore, we will repair it under warranty if the fault with the phone is due to a manufacturing fault. However, as the damaged that you have described is described as cosmetic damage, it is likely that this would be a chargeable repair.

With regards to the Sales of Goods Act 1979, this is legislation that refers to the point of sale. Therefore, as Sony Xperia are the manufacturer of the handset, not the sellers, this is something that you would have to take up with your point of sale.

However, if you are unhappy with the appearance of the scratch, we would advise that all of our handsets do have an anti-shatter proof film on their displays, this is likely to be where the scratch is on your handset. This is removable and does not affect your warranty if you take this off. However, this may affect the durability of the handset's display.

I hope that this helps.

Kind Regards,
***** Hunter

Sony Xperia UK Customer Services

---------

TO:SONY

Hi *****,

Thank you for your prompt response.

I was not aware of the anti-shatter film, that is useful to know. Please could you confirm that your email will be sufficient evidence incase I need to take up the warranty and I am refused due to the removal of the film?

I will replace the film with a suitable alternative to protect the screen from scratches and shattering.

Looking into the anti-shatter film, it seems this is not an unusual problem and has been a long held complaint against most Sony phones. The fact that the new Z2 model will not have the film shows Sony are aware of the problem and have finally listened. It seems counter intuitive to use a durable glass screen but stick a non scratch-resistant film on top. At least you offer the option of removing the film, though your users seem confused about voiding the warranty - even on your own forums. This is why I'd like to confirm that your email can serve as proof, in my case.

Also, could you confirm if there is a similar film on the back of the phone?

Kind regards,

--------

FROM: SONY

Dear ****,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.

Thank you for your swift reply.

I can not see any reason as to why you would be rejected from repair because of removing the shatterproof film from your Sony Xperia Z1 Compact but you are more than welcome to use this email as evidence if you wish to do so if you are infact rejected.

There was some confusion surrounding this until last month when we all at the contact centre received an email stating that it will NOT void warranty removing the film however if the customer wishes to have it put back on it is not a warranty repair and they will be charged for it.

We hope this clears things up for you.

Kind Regards,
**** Glister

Sony Xperia UK Customer Services

Xperia Z1 screen protector catches scratches

I write to you seeking an enquiry about the new Xperia Z1. First I wish to express that this is the most gorgeous and premium looking phone I've come across ever. However since it is on the expensive side, I've done some research and have come up with one question.

The plastic screen protector on the Z1 tends to catch scratches and upon removal of it, the front Sony logo comes off as well. As a consumer dishing out substantial amount I wouldn't wish to lose Sony branding on my phone. I do not intend to use any phone covers since hiding the beautiful Z1 inside a cover is not my agenda as this is my answer to premium looking iPhones.

Please share how to get a replacement front and back plaster protectors with Sony branding or a solution when you have scratches on Z1 front/back side as they tend to catch scratches very easily and there are multiple videos on youtube highlighting the same.

Your response will be eagerly anticipated.... Yours Syed...

That is or was the ASF Anti Shatter Film, it seems that if you remove it you lose your screen warranty, the ASF it is not scratch resistant so you should apply an scratch resistant film on top of this ASF.

Contact your local Sony repair center, they might be able to help you get one.

http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

Ah alright, didn't know removing the ASF would result in void warrantly. So the solution is to get additional screen protectors at the back and front to prevent scratches.

By the way they catch very very easily, recently went to a Sony Center, the salesman had a Z1 in his pocket, he took it out and gave me. It had many small scratches at the back, presumably due to keys. Surprised that a $1000 premium phone catches scratches so easily!!!

I'm sure at some point Sony or AN Other will start selling replacement ASF, else there would end up being a lot of horrible looking Z1's, which would technically be bad for Sony's reputation!

Just incase they don't just apply a front and back screen protector from Day 1 :smileysmileythumbsup:

Well the point is, when I'm spending premium amount for a flagship phone, why should I go and get two more screen protectors on my phone.

Apple with iPhone sets standards here, absolutely premium finish and no silly screen protectors. I appreciate Sony's effort, one and only water and dust proof phone out there, absolutely beautiful and premium looking, top of the line hardware but screen and its viewing angles and the screen protector things puts me off.

there are now glass based screen protectors that you could now fit over the exposed glass after removing the ASP film - they are very effective and look really good

Isn't it silly to use dragontrail glass only to cover it with a film that scratches that you aren't allowed to remove.

It's like buying a sofa with stain resistant fabric, but you must keep the plastic wrapping on it, other wise you lose the warranty.

Agree, really find it silly. What if I bought a new Z1 today and ended up scratching the film. I'm doomed, ain't I?

Sony says you can't remove it since the warranty is void and they don't have a replacement either. And they're charging a hefty amount for the phone in the first place. Really loved the phone and it's premium look but this silly film and it's prone to catching scratches turned me away. Also the screen is not the same as Ultra's, Z1's probably a TFT while the big brother's got IPS with a lot better viewing angles.

Dont' want to find myself being taunted by my friends for a phone with no viewing angles

well isn't it silly to assume that a screen has a warranty in the first place - tell me how that works

if you break the screen with or without the ASF unless you have extra insurance cover it won't be covered anyway

am I missing something

I agree. Unfortunately for me...I only found out about the screen protector street scratching it and doing research. I never use screen protectors...And the z1 is suppose to be the best glass out there...so I didn't think I'd need one.

For an innovative company..Sony is pretty stupid to put an easily scratched plastic on top of their brilliant drain tail glass..And then advertise it being scratch resistant.

Had I known it was so..I would have either gotten another phone...Or put a screen protector. Now I'm wishing I didn't buy this.

This is certainly my last Sony product.

The least they could have done is admit their stupidity and offer replacements for the anti shatter screens

I too have the Z1 and i`m really happy with it. EXCEPT the screen protector was scratched already after 2 days of quite careful usage. When i asked sony how i could replace the screen protector the only response i got was" If you remove the screen protector the warranty will be voided" SONY you need to give your customers an easy option of fixing this obviously big problem.

Wow, not one reply from sony on this one.
That's rediculous - as if pretending the problem doesn't exist makes it go away.

I have had the same issue, so disappointed to find within one week of owning the phone that the front and back were covered in scuffs and scratches (I look after my phone and try to keep it away from keys etc)

When I bought the phone I specifically asked the sales person if I needed to buy an aftermarket protector, he told me the phone was durable and scratch resistant so wouldn't need one, so wrong! I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to find out how I can get the screen back to an unscratched state so I can put an aftermarket film on.

I have been back to the store I bought it from, a local Sony store, called the Sony customer care line and the authorised Sony repair store. Everyone I speak to tells me something different in regards to replacing the ASF film, how much it will cost, who can replace it and the impact on guarantees. Sony call centre told me the waterproof guarantee would be void if I removed the ASF, being waterproof is the key reason I bought the phone. To say the least my patience has run out and I don't know who to believe.

Sony need to make it clear to consumers and their resellers that the glass may be scratch resistant but the ASF film heat sealed on top of the glass is NOT. If I had been told this I would have put an aftermarket film on straight away and would not be in this mess.

Come on Sony this isn’t good enough, do the right thing by your customers and look after them!
