Sounds strange, have you tried with a Sony headset to see if you experience the same problem?

Otherwise I would suggest that you perform a software repair on your unit via Update Service:
www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/

Hey there,
I've bought my Xperia J a couple of months ago,and ever since I've bought it I've been facing this issue,it's that it only reads headsets if you turn off the phone, plug in the headset, and then turn the phone back on,and if you want to go back to the speaker you have to redo this process,except-of course- you unplug the headset when you turn off the phone.
I've tried a number of headsets, all CTIA-3,and the same problem occures.

And it's not only when you use the headset for music, even phone calls.

It's grinding my gears..I hope that I'd get some help from you guys here.
