This is a debatable topic, my opinion is that you do NOT need an antivirus, as long as you download apps from the playstore, you double check which permissions each app need, if an app need access to your contacts and its only a wallpaper that should rise a flag, don't go to devious websites and be careful with email attachments. If you get an antivirus, your phone will slow down, your battery life will decrease and it will create other issues.

Indeed this is a topic of much discussion - I own an IT security company and have seen many viruses/spyware on Android devices for example (Google - android firefox nsa spyware) the main one recently which hit the news - If you do want to use an antivirus then the best free app is Avast found here there are 2 other very slightly better apps which are paid for only, one been Kaspersky there is a free version of this but it's not as good at detecting virus strings in real time like Avast is but the paid for version is - But this is my opinion

True but that is only one of many examples of how viruses and spyware get circulated and in this case reported on the news - The percentage of viruses etc found on Android devices is miniscule compared to Windows based devices thus never gets any recognition but like Windows not every virus gets reported only the big ones like what happened with the NSA - I could go on for a long time explaining the ins and outs and the hows or members here could look for Justin Case, known as jcase, a mobile security researcher who spoke at the recent XDA Devcon

NSA is what the USA calls National Security Agency

and XDA Devcon is short for XDA Developer Conference (XDA is a website for anyone who is keen to learn new things like for example rooting and custom roms)
