K9 Mail is not preinstalled in the phone. It's a free app that you can download from the play store.

The reason i want you to try this is to see if this is a problem with the preinstalled email app in your phone.

Completed upgrades on Xperia LT26i at the weekend, but now my e-mail gives me the error message "unable to open connection to server" when i am on 3G.

On wifi e-mail works fine but I need it also when out of wifi range.

General internet connection works on both wifi and 3G.

Any suggestions?

Are you trying to send or receive emails when you get this message?

Sometimes the operators proxy server can cause problems for certain apps. Try removing proxy and port from your internet settings under Settings -> More -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names and see if that helps.

I get the error message when trying to receive, when sending it just does the wheel at the bottom of the screen but doesn't send.

As soon as I turn the wifi on it all works fine though, it's just on the standard network it won't go.

Looked at Access Point Names and it says Proxy Not set, Port Not set.... so nothing to change there.

Any other ideas?

What happens if you try your email account in another email client like K9 Mail from Google Play?

I don't use any other one or have any other one installed... I hope, although the upgrade did bring a load of things with it that I had to stop running and delete so that my battery life was more than half an hour

I recommend that you contact your mobile operator and check with them that you have the correct APN under Settings -> More -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names -> [your internet settings] and that this APN gives an unrestricted connection. As you get the same problem with another email client, it works over WiFi and internet works over 3G this indicates a problem with the mobile network not being able to give you a connection to the email server.
