USB external storage not working

Hi,

Tablet Z 16GB WiFi

10.31.C.0.136

I've tried tried two different usb drives with two different OTG adapters all of which work fine in other devices, but when plugged into the tablet do nothing. I was expecting the drive to be automatically mounted. The option in settings to mount external USB storage is also greyed out.

Any ideas?

Could be number of factors.. Do you have any information on what kind of drive?, power consumption, ... Usually hard disk drives take a bit more power when they startup to spin, and if the power required is not available from the said usb port it is unlikely to work. I am talking about conventional drives and not solid state.. If you have a separately powered drive you could test it. I do not know if the microusb port on the XTZ can deliver that much power to drive a hard disk.. Again depending on the hard disk in question.. In my case normal usb flash drives work using the otg cable, but not my 500 GB Seagate passport. What kind of drive are you using?

Thanks for the reply. It is a normal usb flash key. Power draw should not be an issue.

Have you tried rebooting the tablet, leaving the drive connected?

what format is the drive ? ( FAT/FAT32/...) and what size ?

FAT32, multiple sizes tried (4, 8 and 32 GB).

Sorry I run out of options. I tried now on my tablet with an 8GB FAT32, using OTG cable from an old Nokia Phone. Mounts normally. Hope someone more knowledgeable in this forum ( there are plenty..) can help you... My developer options are all turned off, btw.

Did you ever find a solution for this problem. I have exactly the same issue with the 'Mount USB Storage' option greyed out.

Not a satisfactory one. A few USB drives don't seem to work, most do. There are no obvious differences in partition layout, file systems etc. All tested drives work just fine on my galaxy s3.
