Thank you for your suggestion. I have read the passage and installed WMF redistributable but I am still left with nothing in the 'sony' folder but the folders 'languages' and 'drivers' in explorer. There is no executable file, since it upgraded and repaired itself, in 'start/all progs/ sony'. I will have to system restore to before the original PC Companion was installed to enable me to reinstall it yet again and be back to where I started. I can't have been the first person to go through this over and over again..

I have recently bought an experia ray and cannot connect to PC Connect. I have downloaded the latest PC Connect 'Sony PC Companion_2.10.173_Web.exe' and installed it. After it was installed and didn't find the phone it started to upgrade but stopped when 'finding drivers'. I had not rebooted the pc after installing PC Connect when it tried to upgrade. I had to reboot as it was the only way to get rid of PC Connect upgrade trying to 'find drivers'.

When I connect the phone via the usb, pc connect does not find the phone. If I go in to device manager with the phone connected it shows a SEMC HSUSB device with a yellow exclamation mark. I have tried different cables and a laptop. I have tried setting the phone to MTP and MSC mode and abled and disabled usb debugging in application/development. I am using windows xp prof, service patch 3. Any help would be very welcome..

Hi, Thanks for that but I am still unable to connect to PC Companion which has several other features besides updating software such as backup, sync etc. I have tried different usb cables and ports and I have looked at the usb faq but I assume the cable and conection are not at fault as device manager shows the phone connected to it as a SEMC HSUSB device. Any more thoughts??

Thank you for the suggestion. I have uninstalled PC Companion although 'add & remove programs' still showed it as installed and won't unistall anymore than it has.. I installed the file you suggested, which was the same file as I had installed, but when installing it stated it was repairing PC Companion but when finished all references to it disappeared. I now have no icon in the all programs/sony folder. The C:\Program Files\Sony\Sony PC Companion folder now only contains folders 'drivers' and 'languages'. Further help would be appreciated....thanks!

I have tried another pc and a laptop. The symptoms are exactly the same which makes me think it is a problem with the phone rather than the software or pc. I have tried lots of things but the main problem is still that the phone is not recognised by windows xp when it is plugged in and therefore non of the software will work as there are no drivers installed. There appears to be a lot of other people in the same situation.. Any firther suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks...

How about booting your PC in Safe Mode? It's an old trick that works for some ....

For Windows XP, start up PC, press F8 before Windows launches. Select Safe Mode with Networking, then try connecting to PC Companion.

Thank you for your suggestion and I have made progress... I had tried connecting the phone is safemode before, with no success, but I did find that I could connect to PC Companion in safemode provided I used the usb on the motherboard and not the usb on the front of the box. However when I rebooted the pc was unusable. Half the icons in the sys tray did not load and I couldn't open the start button to even shut down the pc. I had to use system restore which obviously uninstalled all the sony software. To prove the point I did the same thing again and agan the pc was unusable.

However I then tried a laptop with windows 7 on it and it all worked like a dream in a few minutes. I assume there is therefore a problem with windows xp and pc companion.. Thank you for your help which was much appreciated.
