Bought a brand new Xperia SP last week from a local Sony store. However, within 2 days, I felt disappointed to see the touchscreen malfunction from time to time. The touchscreen feels especially glitchy after using the phone for a few hours. The problem being: after continuous usage (for a few hours or so), the touchscreen suddenly stops responding to touches. This issue is temporarily resolved by locking and unlocking the phone. However, it repeats after 3-4 minutes once again until I completely restart the phone. Then, it comes back again after a few hours.

Apart from this, another type of touchscreen issue I'm facing is that during the abovementioned time of unresponsiveness, the screen sometimes registers a single touch as multiple touches, as in ghost touches. If I'm playing a game, the game goes totally haywire, or if I'm in the normal homescreen or such, it opens up a number of applications, settings, and so on. This can be compared to a similar defect in PC, where some bug causes multiple windows of search, calculator, browser, etc to open up and fill up the monitor screen.

I'm sad to see my new phone, that too a relatively recently launched model, behave like this and am at a loss about what to do. Any help is appreciated. Please recommend...

PS: I don't think it's due to overload on the RAM or the processor, because I rarely open more than 3 programs at a time, and after I close an application, I remove it from the 'recently used' screen, and then use a task killer (ZDBox) to kill all unnecessary non-system tasks...

About phone:

Model number: C5302

Android version: 4.1.2

Baseband version: 8960A-AAAAATAZQ-40031007-01

Kernel version: 3.4.0-perf-g1285c6c-01085-gff95ffc

BuildUser@BuildHost) )

#1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Mar 7 21:57:46 2013

Build number: 12.0.A.1.211

same with me i just came here to report this problem.

strangely after using my SP one month without any problem, it starts rejecting my touches until i unlock the phone again . its not because of any ram or processor overloading coz i have only 2-3 apps on my phone and i just perform a hard-reset( the problem begins after reset ), previously i used my SP for heavy gaming and nearly 800 mb remaining on my sp but it works good .

Same problem here, it occurs about once a week. I found a workaround, which works sometimes (but not always) - I use the camera button, which make touch screen to response.

I have had to do HW reset few times. It seems to get worse over last few weeks.

I faced this problem too. Touch screen just stopped working!

But issue occured without charger connected. I got a incoming call and there was no way I could accept it.

Display on/off didn't help too.

I can't even restart the phone as touch just didn't accept it. It was frustrating as I can't even remove the battery as it is embedded within.

Finally I figured it out by removing the SIM card and phone restarted itself. Thanks God!

Really disappointed with Sony to put this crap phone on sale. They should have tested it thoroughly before!

@Sam I have the same problem, what @IamVishal did by removing the SIM was RESET the phone, that is the standard workaround that the USERS have discovered (either lock/unlock or reset). Does SONY even pay attention to these issues? Have you read the rest of the thread before jumping to the conclusion that it is a SIM problem?

I currently have this problem right now. Got the phone last Friday, (currently thursday). I put my phone down, got a little wet, but i has had some rain on it before and now only my home button and unlock things work. Can't type or go back and I don't even know how to take that battery out to use the phone. Taking it back to the EE store tomorrow, wondering if it is worth it getting a replacement. stupid thing, I'm so angry and dissappointed.

This really isnt like Sony. A few years back, I bought a Sony TV, walkman, playstation, smarthphone (X10, Txt Duo,Xperia Active) because I believe in the reliability of the Sony product. It didn't matter that it was way more expensive and it didn't have the best specs, it was supposed to last for years if taken care of properly. I guess dependability and durability isn't one of Sony's strong points anymore since you guys have been cutting prices to compete with Samsung and the other mobile manufacturers.

I bought my Xperia SP last December 2013. At first, I was blown away by its performance. I played graphic heavy games on it and it took it without a hitch. Then came January and there really isn't anything to do since it just keeps raining so I played on the device only to find out that sometimes the game freezes or so I thought. I close the screen and open it again to find that the lockscreen doesn't appear right away. I press the power button again and it finally shows the lockscreen. I continue playing. A few hours later, the top part of the touchscreen stops responding completely. I restart it and still it's there. I do a hard reset (yellow button on the back) and it works fine again. Then the next morning, after using it for half an hour, there it is again. The top part of the touchscreen won't work again, it still doesn't respond until today. I already tried repair via Sony PC Companion twice and it still won't work. If android 4.3 won't fix this, I'll root it to android 4.4 Kitkat and if that doesn't work I'll just throw it away. You guys won't replace it anyway or give me a refund for a good looking product that has crappy depedability.

Sony should just declare a recall for all the defective Xperia's out there. There are so many that this can't be isolated incidents. Stop making your stuff in China. I worked for a third party that service HP Home and Home Office and we had customer complaints to the roof becase of DOA and faulty products coming from our plant in Schenzen, China. You guys owe it to your customers to tell us the truth if it's a hardware or software problem. Don't make excuses. Customers don't need reasons, we need results.

Well that tired me out. I just feel depressed that I have been cheated out of my money, it was hard earned and it all just went to **bleep**. It ain't gonna happen again. I'm not gonna buy another product from you guys if you don't sort this out and get it fix. Thankfully there are always alternatives to your products.

I'm afraid that I just found the same problem in my new SP. Just after 2 days using it, multitouch is failing

shamefully. I installed "multitouch tester" to check it properly and I can barely make 3 touches simultaneously, and even sometimes 2 touches. (its supposed to give 10!)

I'm feeling very dissapointed because i alredy had to change my SP for another using the warranty because the camera button didn't work.

And now I find this in the new one. I have real doubts about the building quality because my new phone also has the power button bent and bad positioned (for me this is not a big problem)

If this multitouch problem persists, I'll regret buying an Xperia. I don't know what to do, I can't
dispense with my telephone for another week!

EDIT: I realized that this issue happens while the phone is charging. Unplugging the charger makes it work properly. Anyways I'm still concerned about this, because this did'nt happen before and is not a normal behavior of the screen.

Same with me. The ghost touches happened to me too. And in my case one time my finger wasnt even close to the area where it happened. After locking and unlocking, it worked fine. But its strange that time to time my phone registers single touch as multiple touches and then works just fine for another 2 to 5 days without any issue. I dont know whats causing the problem as I find it a bit strange.
