SMS/MMS expiry time

Hi,

Does anyone know how/if I can set an expiry time for SMS/MMS messages?

On my previous phones I would normally set it to two or four hours. If, after that time, the message could not be delivered I would at least get a delivery-failed notification from the network. So either way, I'd get a delivery note for success or at devliery-failed note within a reasonable time.

Any ideas? I don't see anything in the Messaging app's Settings page

As far as I know there are no such settings in this phone. Might be possible by using some 3rd party app like Handcent/GoSMS but I'm not sure.

Some additional information after more digging.

It appears that the functionality used to exist, but have been removed from the core Android code base somewhere around Ice Cream Sandwish or Jelly Bean I looked through the code on GitHub and the GSM Telephony provider knows nothing about validity periods when constructing the SMS PDU.

*sigh* What in blazes is Google thinking?

open the messaging app > settings > Delivery report, you will get a checkmark once your mms its sent, also if your sms its not sent you will get a notification.

I've noticed the delivery report checkmark, yup, but haven't checked if it actually does the correct thing. There're bugs open since 2009 about delivery notification processing being broken and the delivery indicator not working correctly.

The failure I want to detect is not if the network rejects the message out of hand or if the handset could not submit the message to the network. I want to be able to control how long the network should keep trying to deliver the message before giving up and reporting the failure to me. Most networks seem to have a seven day default ... that's way too long for person to person messaging.
