Well, the Exchange app will just connect to the server and perform the tasks according to the settings you've put in. It all depends on the size of the e-mails you have received. Ofcourse you could try some other exchange app like K9 mail and see if there is any difference in the data usage.

I have a Sony Xperia Neo V which I have been using since past one year. Recently I changed my 2G unlimited connection to 3G and I started facing problems with Data usage. The internal Email application which I sync with MS outlook started using GBs of data in 5-6 days for which I had to pay 3-4000 for extra 3G usage. When I uninstall and install the app it works fine for some days but it again downloads data. Then I downloaded Onavo but past month Onavo downloaded 2 gb data in 3 days which I havent used obviously. Can someone explain what is the problem and how should I rectify it. I used Gingerbread for first 6 months and then updated ICS in Spetember last year. The phone worked fine till January 2013, but since Feb, Mar, April and May, I have paid around 15k of 3G data usage which is way too high when compared to my bills in Oct, Nov, dec etc...

Well, it can depend on a number of things. The first thing I would recommend is that you repair the phone software via PC Companion so you get a fresh new start. Download all apps again via WiFi and then keep an eye on the data counter to see which apps that are using the most data. If some apps keep using unnormal amounts, get back to me and we'll keep looking into this.

Hi Samuel,

Thanks for your reply. I tried that and repaired the OS and downloaded all the apps once again. everything was working fine for 15 days and I stopped checking the data usage counter. But, in past two days, the "EXCHANGE SERVICES APP" has used over 300 mb of data which is enormous. My peers who receive similar mails in Exchange use about 10-15 mb in a month at max. I have checked the app settings as well and there is no problem with the same.

There is some problem in the "EXCHANGE SERVICES APP" which is an internal app. So I cannot remove the same as well. Please suggest an alternative. Because of this app, I have already paid the carrier an amount which is close to the actual cost of the phone in just 4-5 months. Pls help.

Hi There,

I am also facing the same issue. Email app consumed 720 MB of data in 20 days. So I had to use 'Restrict background data' option in data monitor to stop auto sync over 2G\3G data. Now the problem occurs in wi-fi also. It consumes 1GB data in a single night. over wifi I dont have much issues with data usage. But it drains the battery. My battery usage came down to 24% from 100% in 6 hours while I was sleeping(didnt use the phone at all). Battery usage shows Exchange servicess consumed 54% of the battery. My Email sync option is set to 'Manual' , still I do not know why this keeps happening. Is there a way to stop data usage for a particular app over wifi also?
