First off. This phone is awesome. I really like it.

The screen is great, the waterproofing is unique for this hardware. The camera takes really good images, at least better than my SGS2 (but that's a generation or two old now).

The phone also supports all tecnology that exists today, so it should be future proof for a year or two.

Some of the bugs that people are complaining about in here are software bugs, that I expect Sony will fix in future releases of firmware. And of course some get a broken device, but I think that is rare. Remember that these phones get developed and released really fast these days, so one should expect some bugs on newly released phones (and one should expect them to be fixed in a timely manner too).

If you can't have bugs, perhaps you should try some of the last generation phones, these should be rather safe, stable and a bit cheaper (and also a bit boring these days).

Not sure you got any help from me....

As for battery life this is really a question of usage. If you use the phone only for calling and sending some texts, the datasheet of the phone maker will probably be close to the truth. If you use the phone for video/music/social/email/photos and all else you can do, you should expect about a work day of use (and at least expect nightly charging). This is btw no different than for any other smartphone in the market.

The Sony Xperia Z is a great phone, fantastic in fact. Here are some good points.

1. Fantastic Display. Watching movies, viewing pictures and playing high def games is a great experience. The Bravia Engine 2 is amazing for when you want to view pictures in amazing colour.

2. Being able to Throw the enchanced pictures using Bluetooth and NFC to other products is awesome.

3. The Battery life. For me atleast, I can get two long days out of a single charge at Max brightness (Adaptive lighting selected), during that time I listen to music quite often.

4. The durabilty of the phone, it's sturdy and well made. The weight of the phone really adds to the quality feel.

5. Sony's Delicate OS overlay of Android, it's sublte but pleasing.

6. Music both through headphones and the speaker is fantastic. Some people have been reporting low volume but certainly not myself, I can't raise it over 50% volume unless I want to go deaf. The walkman app adds great customisation with the equaliser and various enchancement settings but my favourite by far is the 'ClearAudio+' feature, really makes music sound great.

7. The camera in the right conditions is great. Macro shots in bright lighting come out a treat

Things that aren't so good.

1. LED bug in Stamina Mode. Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update since it's a software related issue.

2. Camera quality can be poor in certain conditions. Over compression of files leads to heavy noise. Some users reporting saturation of colours. Again, software related and hopefully will be tended to in the near future.

3. The Anti-Shatter Film does scratch easy (Even though it's not a scratch protector), it should state in the manual that you should apply a proper SP over the ASF before using the device.

4. Glass screen isn't Oleophobic so you will need to invest in a screen protector that is, if you want the feature.

It's 2:30am so that's all I can think of at the moment. I am pretty sure I've covered all basis.

In the end, this phone is great, and as a first smartphone, your really getting one of the top devices on the market at the present time. Some issues are present as with any new product but hopefully they will be a thing of the past soon with firmware updates being rolled out regionally. One thing I cannot stress enough is, invest in a cast/pouch and a proper screen protector that is both scratch resistance and Oleophobic (to ward off oil and smudges) to put OVER the ASF after you buy it.

Goodluck, Hope I was of some help

Yes, yes, yes. Please remember that the phone does have the latest hardware. It's built compactly. It's going to heat up when your using it. So many people stress out about this and start bagging on Sony when it's completley normal and there is nothing to worry about. If it gets to the point it's too hot there will be a warning anyway which i've never got even when pushing the phone to it's limits

If it is your "1st Smartphone" you won't really go wrong. Everything pointed out is great and accurate detail from loyal fan-based user input.

The Sony experience is simplistic yet powerful enough and enjoyable. It is not the latest/greatest tech and that is OK. Sony errs on the side caution with proven components so nothing inside is overly "cutting" cutting edge - If you want all the bells and whistles that's Samsung S4 (Not water resistant, plastic with aluminum) or HTC One presently.

Issues are well documented on Xperia Blog, XDA Developers Site

http://www.xperiablog.net/

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2083

If you have a computer running Windows you can connect, transfer files/data and perform updates. MAC can as well, just not so well.

Having used Android phones a long time (First was Sony Ericsson X10) I chose the ZL because it was the first "available" HD 1080p, Quad Core LTE phone that has Micro SD expansion. Not a fan of glass so Z not optimal because no true North American LTE variant yet. Connecting to PC is important and Samsung is pure garbage. Sony states they have worked hard to improve and want to become number 3. They have sold a lot of Z/ZL units so hopefully they will fix the issues that keep the device from being optimal - this, they have never been "quick" at.

You can see reviews online at places like gsmarena, cnet - You will be spending a considerable sum of money so research and choose based on your needs - asthetics it's the nicest phones out there right now. Performance wise, it holds it's own and hopefully Sony steps up to improve this.
