Problem updating phone software

I have been trying for over a week to update software to my phone through PC Companion. I get through to step 2 (Prepare) software downloads onto my computer but I then get the screen of "Follow these steps to prepare phone for update" and I can't get past it. Each time I disconnect, turn off phone then reconnect holding the volume key down and turn the phone back on (because the computer is not registering the phone) and I have to start all over again and still get same screen, telling me to prepare phone and when I close the screen, it cancels the update. What am I doing wrong?! Very frustrated right now as I've tried about 10 times to do this with the exact same result. Just tried again and get another message saying the online server is currently not accessible. Grrrr. Sometimes the "dumb" phones were so much easier.

update with sony update service,it is easier and with less bugs.

The update service itself can be easier, I will ink it below as well as the steps for updating with PC Companion:

http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/

1. Before you start you have to download the PC Companion software from http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/

and install it on your PC.

2. Once installed on your PC, double-click the PC Companion icon on your desktop to start the update.

Note! For some models you will be prompted to do a backup prior to the update and then restore.

3. Install and open PC Companion then select Support Zone.

4. Phone Software Update.

5. Start.

6. Repair Phone

7. Continue

8. Accept data removal

9. Next

10. Wait for prepare

11. Select Phone

12. Follow the connection steps

The SUS worked for me though SUS failed one time cause i only had 24% battery I charged the battery and updated through PCC - Failed but with using SUS - Success!!!. I was so close to returning the phone to the store.
