As a general rule though there is no difference between phones with different SI numbers.

Think of them as batch numbers in production. Different customers will buy different batch numbers and with this a firmware update can be rolled out slowly as the customer wants it.

The remaining important piece of information is thaat you are not the customer in this sale, mobile phone carriers are. These are the customers which decide for one reason or another that updates shoud not be released to you yet. The most reasonable reason for this is that different carriers use different bandwith for their mobile signals and firmware may not work as well with a carriers bandwith or software associated with this.

Clear as mud?

I would seem that the customer is the company which purchased the product from Sony.

With regard to firmware updates it would seem that the process is to wait until all the carriers in a country have approved an update and to then pass that on to those with a sim free phone. The idea seems to be that you will be using one of those carriers and any trouble they have with their phones you will also have.

All of which leads to protracted firmware rollouts. Some information as to where along the line Sony is with each carrier would be helpful though.
