Hi. This is obviously a global Sony problem. I have the very same issue with my Xperia U in Australia. The update service doesn't help either, it freeze on the very same point (the low volume button thing), just in different graphics compared to PC Companion.

Would appreciate if someone can help. Thanks.

I cannot update my xperia U by PC Companion as there is an update available. I do everything with the instuction but it doesn't want to go to update. I push the volume down button and connect the usb cable, the light becomes green and there happens nothing. I'm sorry but it's in polish but I hope you know it in English. Please, help!

Thanks for the fast feedback!

I tried on one PC only so far (Win7 64).

In terms of the freeze up, it does exactly what Elivin described above. The PC Companion ask me to turn off the phone for 5 secs (update service 30 secs), press low volume button and connect the phone to computer via USB. Once I do that, the illumination bar light up green for about 2 secs, display shows Sony logo and followed by battery charging symbol. And that's pretty much it, nothing happen after this. The PC Companion / update service freeze up on the screens attached to my and Elivin's comments above.

By freeze up I mean that the program just doesn't continue the update between preparation stage and update stage. I can still close the program, so it's not actually frozen, it just does nothing after the preparation part of the software update.

I'll try your advice and let you know.

For how long suppose I hold the volume down button approx.? I did hold it for a couple minutes last time.

Hi uliwooly.

I much appreciate your support, but I'm giving up now. I did everything you said including the firewall / antivir harakiri and holding volume down button until I had a sore finger. Doesn't work.

Sony should really fix the update process and ged rid of the silly volume down step. I'd expect the SW update to be a plug and play thing, not half a day wasted on web forum looking for help.

I'll just stay with 2.3.7 system for now and buy my next phone from another manufacturer.
