Compass needle unstable

Hi everyone!

I have a problem with my compass. I became aware of the problem when I started using Google Sky Map. The display twitches even if the phone is laying on a flat surface. So I downloaded Smart compass to see if this problem is persistent - and it is. In Smart compass the needle is constantly jumping/twitching and the degrees vary by 1 to 10 degrees. As stated, this is very annoying when using any app that uses the compass.

Ha ha, nice1 ...no really, as I surfed the net I found out that I'm not the only1 and as I'm not alon mayboe someone has already came across a solution.

All Xperia U has this problem

When you go to the service menu for the accelometer the values keeps changing even if the phone is flat.

that can only be if my reason is correct..its either too accurate or not accurate at all.

So there's no way to fix this... Well, some might say: "What do you care? It's only a phone." Yes, that's true, but I decided to buy it because it has a compass, as I like to go hiking through the woods - and with a faulty compass, that's not much fun.

Perhaps will the ICS update bring some improvement, or maybe someone from the Sony staff can enlighten us.

I'll keep that in mind when buying my next phone.

Sorry not to have a solution to your real problem, but just wanted to say that I managed to stabilize it more in Google Sky by tweaking the app options. It still flickers, but considerably less and it's readable now. Thing is I've never tested it on a clear night sky so I'm not sure whether the Google Sky is aligned with the real one

The compass north however seems to be in the correct direction.

But yeah, there IS a problem with the XU compass. Any ideas, solutions? Is it a hardware problem?...

Same problem here, it makes the compass, the sky map and many other apps unusable. Is there a fix for this issue already? Or should I return my phone?

I had the same problem (http://talk.sonymobile.com/message/440581) . it's a hardware related issue (probably board) you must return the phone. Xperia P and S has the same issue.
