Backlight bleed

Never owned a Sony smartphone before (coming from the HTC Legend) so after many hours of research eventually ordered two! - the Xperia U for my daughter and the Xperia P in Silver for myself.

Received my silver Xperia P from O2 yesterday. Really pleased with the look and feel of the phone and the contents of the box with 2 smart tags, screen protector and the rapid charger included BUT dismayed to find some nasty backlight bleed which is very noticeable in the top left corner and bottom right corner especially when the phone powers up and shows the Sony then Xperia logos in the centre. It looks like a green light shining in from the corners of the screen - see photos

I assume this is not normal as you can still make out the green discolouration on any dark background. It is not so noticeable outside in daylight but indoors is distracting.

The Xperia U on the otherhand has a nice black screen when powering up, a minute amount of even light all around the screen edges.

My replacement handset is on the way - can I expect more of the same or is this my Sony beginners bad luck?

I thnk its better to get it replaced, normally all sony phones have background bootscreen as black, there is a possibility that your phone has some fault in it!!

I suggest that you contact your local support to check if a repair center can take a look at this. I looked at some Xperia P's here and they don't look anything like the pictures.

could you follow this and let me know the results..

1 turn your phone off
2 turn it on again and NOTICE if there is any bleeding
then

3 your phone will show Xperia...the Black wont be real black then

4 after this it will vibrate once and the screen will still show "xperia" but will be pitch black this time...if you still have this bleeding then something is wrong....other wise it is fine

alternately you can check through the service menu

and then in 'test' you can check 'screen' and see if something is wrong

Yes thats where I noticed it first as soon as I plugged in charger. Had a replacement today from O2 which is better but not perfect, there is a small amount of bleed bottom right corner on start up, not noticeable so much in normal use have to lool for it so I guess I will stay with this one

I think this is present on most handsets if you look hard enough, I can only see this on my second handset if I am in a dark room and crank up the brightness and it is only visible then on black backgrounds e.g. email or settings page. I checked a friends handset today and it also had some greenish light bleed when viewed in a dark environment. I think I will stick with this one as the next one maybe as bad as the first one I recieved which was really noticeable.

i think that its the white magic's extra white LED that calibrates at the start...because in this forum the backlight bleed issue is noted only on an XP (only phone to have whitemagic)..see to it that once the phone is completly started...you can set a wall paper thats totally black and then play with different brightness values to see if it re-occurs...if it doesnt then it cant get any better

after all you care about the screen when using the device and not when its turning on! :smileygrin:

I have this problem too. There's noticeable green backlight bleed on black backgrounds around the lower right corner of the display. I sent my phone away for repair, but nothing was changed! I'm waiting for an explanation on this from Sony UK support on this.
