Memory Card microSDHC Compatibility Issues?

Hi, everyone,

I've recently bought a Xperia mini pro (sk17i) and I'm having a problem with the memory.

I tried to replace the original 2GB microSD card with a 4GB microSDHC Sandisk (Class 4) but it didn't work. I formatted the microSDHC to FAT32 but still didn't work on the XMP. I put the card in other devices and it works fine.

That being said, these are my questions:

1. Does the phone only accept microSD cards?

2. Is it memory class issue? I've read many posts about this topic on the internet that say the phone does read classes 2, 6 and 10 but it has troubles with class 4 cards.

3. Could this issue be fixed with a software update? That would be awesome, since I don't wanna buy a new card.

The phone should support your new card.

Do you know if you are running the latest software in the phone? Have you checked if there's any updates available? Run PC Companion and connect the phone if you don't know and haven't tried already.

Have you tried to format the card in the phone (that is not doing it via a computer)? This can be done at Settings > Storage > Unmount SD card > Erase SD card.

When I open PC Companion it tells me the phone is up to date. Anyway, I'll check if there's any update I could have missed.

In regards to your 2nd question, when I put the Sandisk microSDHC, the options Unmount and Erase SD card are disabled or blocked, like if there wasn't any memory card inserted.

PS.: When you say "latest software", are you referring to the latest Android or the latest firmware?

If PC Companion tells you the phone is up to date there's no update you could have missed. I meant the latest available software version for this phone (which is not necessarily the same as the latest Android version).

The card that came with the phone, does it still work when you put it back? Can the phone read it?

If it can, I suggest you try to get hold of a third card so try with since right now you would have one card working and another not. If possible try with the same type of card as the one currently not working.

The card that came with the phone works perfect, even after putting the other one.

Now it comes to mind that some other devices I've got don't recognize the Sandisk microSDHC neither, (my VAIO laptop, card readers). Most of the times I had to use an USB reader to manage the card.

I'll follow your advice, and I'll try putting another cards on the phone. If one of them works, I'll take my chances buying a microSD of that kind.

Anyway, I think it'd be useful if you guys do a little research and come up with a list of cards with issues. It's a great phone and it's a shame not to be able to use all its potential.

I borrowed a coworker's Nokia microSDHC 4 GB Class 4 card and the phone accepts it. I'll keep testing. El mensaje fue editado por: tinchoalvrez

It sounds to me like your SD card is broken. Take it back to the store where you bought it and ask for a new one.

No, the card isn't new, I've got it since Nov 2010. Perhaps it's a problem with that specific card, because it works in some devices (Nokia phones, USB card readers) and it doesn't in others (laptop card readers, desktop computer card readers).

After a while, I bought a Patriot 32 GB microSD card Class 10. It works perfect!

For my SK17i I tried two 32 GB SDHC Class 10 cards from Kingmax and Kingston. Both didn't work reliable. Finally I bought a Transcend 32 GB Class10/UHS-1 card that made it.
