Possible Battery Problem?

Ok, so I know this problem seems to exist in other forums, but either people describe it differently and it I'm not sure if it's the same problem or there never seems to be an answer for me. So here goes.

I have a SE x10 that I got about 2 years ago. Everything worked fine, despite the battery never being great, I never had this problem. I rooted my phone about 6 months ago, no problems. Since rooting it, I have played around with different ROMs: I started with stock, then with CM7, now I'm running wolfbreak (ARC 2.3 ported to x10). I have not had this problem with previous ROMs, only with wolfbreak, however, I did restore from a stock backup and the problem persisted, so I don't believe it is anything to do with the ROM.

Now as we all know, the battery on these phones is horrible from the get go, however, the problem I am having is ten fold. Basically, the battery will show 80%, but the "ANDROID SYSTEM SHUTTING DOWN" message pops up and it dies. Sometimes the red LED flashes and I cannot turn it back on, sometimes I can. Sometimes it turns back on and I have no problem for hours, sometimes it shuts right down again. I have tried calibrating the battery with several methods. I tried by charging to full, wiping battery stats in recovery, and repeating until phone reads 100%. I tried using battery calibration app, with it's suggested method (charging to 100%, pressing calibrate button, allowing full discharge). I tried the above method with pulling the battery. None of these calibration methods have fixed the problem.

I have tried without the SD card. I have done a complete factory reset of the phone, wiping dalvik cache, cache partition, battery stats, etc. (basically everything I can in recovery. I even tried repairing permissions in a last ditch effort that maybe that was it.

Needless to say, none of this has worked (and all of it is suggested EVERYWHERE on the web, even by SE personnel) and the problem still persists.

I am unsure as to how to check if the battery is in need of being replaced and unfortunately I don't know anyone who was as stupid as me and bought this phone so I cannot swap it out. To be honest it seems like it is with the battery triggers in that they trigger the phone to shut down when it doesn't need to, but I have very little understanding of android/linux and don't really know where to start to fix this if even possible. But again, since I tried to calibrate and it doesn't do anything, this seems less likely. Is there another way to check if the battery is dead?

Other information that may be useful:

A full charge is listed as 4271 mAV.

the battery is usually around 40-42 degrees C, which seems a little high, but from what I've been reading it doesn't seem excessive.

When my phone is plugged in, I do not have this problem.

If anyone could help me with a method for checking the battery that I may be able to use it would be great.

Also I use a mac and have no access to a PC, which makes some troubleshooting difficult since Sony is still stuck in 1999.

Thanks in advance for the help.

infact it's bc of the ROMs, there is a similar issue with the 2011 Xperias if you flash from 2.3.4 to 2.3.2 you will get this battery % error I'll try to find that answer, that might work for you or give you an idea

Don't forget to mark the Correct Answers & Helpful Answers

Thank you so much for the quick reponse/alleviating my months of stressing. So basically it is a bug with whatever triggers the shutdown. I have wolfbreak (freekernel) ROM with zdzihu's kernal, version 2.3.3 with baseband 71. Now since the patched zdzihu kernel is technically for the ARC, will it work on my x10? I'm pretty sure it will but I want to make sure, and also is the app workaround legit? And does it do just as good a job or do you suggest the patched kernel?

Thanks so much for this but I don't think it will work for me. First off it seems like I need linux and I need to compile the kernel myself, neither of which I have/can do. Second, it's for ARC stock rom, which I pretty much have, but at the same time, it's ported to x10. Thirdly, I know that even in this explanation of why I can't do this, I'm probably wrong, and so basically this seems above my basic android experience. If I'm wrong PLEASE do correct me, and if it's easier than it seems and might be able to lead me in the right direction as to how to fix this PLEASE do. Otherwise you've at least opened my eyes to the root of the problem so I know where to start looking. Thank you very much.
