Front camera disconnects WIFI???!!!

Hi, everyone!

Something really weird is happening with my xperia mini pro (sk17a): Whenever I turn the front camera on, WIFI DISCONNECTS!!!!! It reconnects automatically as soon as I turn the front camera off... Is this a known issue? Is there any solution? Could somebody please help?

Hi, it could be a software issue, suggest you software repair phone with either PC Companion or Update Service. Be aware that this process will erase phone data completely.

I just updated the phone’s software to latest version with PC-Companion. First thing I did when phone restarted was connect to wifi and turn front camera on. No luck. Same problem. WiFi disconnects when I turn front camera on, reconnects as soon as I turn front camera off.................

Any ideas?

Oh, yes. EVERY time I turn the front camera on, WiFi disconnects...

(No problem with the primary camera, thou)

Let's go back to basic .... Check Wi-Fi Settings!

Settings>Wireless & networks>Wi-Fi settings>MENU (button)>Advanced>Wi-Fi sleep policy, is it set to Never?

Yes, Wi-Fi Sleep policy is set to "Never".

Phone is two months old and I found the problem only yesterday when trying to make a video-call with skype for the first time... In other words, I’ve never tried it before yesterday, so I don’t know. But I guess we can assume the problem was there all the time...

I see .... Skype! Check if there is any setting in the app that might cause this problem.

I knew the Word “skype” would raise a red flag!

But bear in mind I just wiped my phone clean last night (I did a software repair with pc-companion, as you suggested) and first thing I did when phone restarted (i.e. No skype whatsoever. Skype was not even installed now) was connect to wi-fi and turn the front camera on and wi-fi disconnected... And I can reproduce the problem easily: EVERY time I turn the front camera on, wi-fi disconnects... So no, It doesn’t seem to be a skype thing...

Thank you for the video .... this prompt me to ask another question! Does the Wi-Fi disconnect without activating the front camera? I mean just activate camera, then exit to see if Wi-Fi disconnects.

Issue with camera app? but .... Software repair should resolve that. One other thing you may want to check, test with another Wi-Fi Network.

I am starting to think that it is hardware related ....

First of all, thanks a BUNCH. You’re being super-kind and I really appreciate it.

As for your questions

I’ve tried two other networks (Work and parents in law). Same problem.
Main camera is OK (i.e.: It doesn’t disconnect Wi-Fi)
Camera app works fine. Actually everything on this phone seems to work fine, except Wi-Fi gets disconnected whenever the front camera is activated, either manually as shown on my video or when skype activates it for a video-call (Actually video-calls with skype work fine on 3G, i.e., “Front Camera Doesn’t Disconnect 3G” )

The hardware hypothesis, I don’t know... I can’t imagine what could be the mechanism of action here (this is like your TV turning off every time you flush the toilet ) It really smells like a software issue, but then the softared was repaired and there is the problem still, so... yeah, I have no idea...

Meanwhile, perhaps “Assumed Answered” shouldn’t be the status of this question? (I don’t know how that works)

No problem, just trying my best to assist.

Frankly, after your further explanation, it sounded more like a 'TV' (Wi-Fi) issue than a 'toilet' (Front Camera) issue. Sadly, we have no solution for it .... I guess the next best option for you is to visit the local Service Centre. Tell them exactly what you have tried so far, they should be able to help.

By the way, thread was marked as 'Assumed Answered' for tracking purposes .... Don't bother about it.

Or .... wait for ICS (just another option for you), not sure if it will solve your 'TV' issue. ICS for your Xperia Mini Pro will be out starting from the end of May/early June (vary by market and carrier requirements).
