Hi,

I thought smartphones and their screens would only operate with skin to screen contact.

I was able to operate through a t-shirt. WTF?

Is this supposed to happen?

yes it is supposed to happen, this is how Capacitive sensing works

the human body is also an electrical conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the screen's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance

Its just my iphone 3gs did not do it. I find it good because it would then not activate something in my pocket.

if you keep it in your pocket leave the screen facing away from your body
