Headphone standard

I've just purchased the Sony Experia S phone and my Dr Dre headphones wont work. Reading various blogs, I'm unsure what standard the Xperia S is using for the headset - OMTP or CTIA (I am assuming OMTP).

There's 'advice' out there that says if I hold down the power button AND volumn down button at the same time the phone will re-align itself to accept the Dr Dre headphones (tried it - doesn't work)

There's also advice out there to buy an adaptor (1249-0456 EC250) for the headphones but looks to be old advice.

So, I want to know if anything can be done to make my headphones compatible with my Xperia S

The Xperia S uses the CTIA standard which from what I understand is more common.

Are they just not producing any sound? When I used the old headphones with my laptop I had to pull the headphones out a little bit to hear audio properly (not an elegant solution). I assume your headphones work with other devices.

If they are OMTP headphones the EC250 WILL work. I used one for quite a while with a Xperia ray.

Hi - the sound just comes from the phone, seems to make no difference when I insert the headphone jack. I'm going to check if they are OMTP but I suspect they are CTIA. One of your colleagues said over chat help that if they have a Mic they definitely wont work and there's nothing to be done, but I am keen to see if there's any other options out there - because my Dr Dre headphones cost a bomb!

This is almost criminal, I asked via email support and was told it was my headphone that were the problem, etc. I have had to try, or buy and return multiple headphones to try and find a suitable pair. I am now looking at bluetooth headphones to work around this. I was so frustrated then I found this on XDAI:

"Straight from the words of a Sony technician:

The cause of the incompatibility: Sony Xperia S supply 2V (Volts) purely from an energy consumption perspective. The microphone in the boundled Sony Mobile headset is Electret microphones that only require a 2V feed. For other suppliers (e.g. IPhones headsets) they can use MEMS microphones that require a minimum of 2,7V.

In order for fully compatibility, Sony smartphones need to supply a minimum of 2,7V. This requires a feature/HW change.

A feature/HW change has been submitted to be implemented in coming products."

I cannot believe that I have been given the runaround by Sony pointing the finger elsewhere when it was their own fault all along. I should either be able to send my device and get the proper H/w or offered a discount on a B/T headset.

This is crazy. Sony, this will be the last thing I ever buy from you.

will Sony mdr zx300 work? are they CTIA?? there's no mic on them so i guest it sould be no problem right?

I am searching from last 2 weeks just to confirm what all earphones are supported by my device.

Because online purchase sites dont tell you what statndard the earphones they are selling.

So the question is , how to come to know which one is supported and which one not without buying . Once bought u cant replace them.

Now I have come to know that my Xperia mini st15i supports OMTP (Sony customer support told so and I am convinced by other blogs). I dint know there is another standard called CTIA till I did some research.

Sony customer support didnt tell about CTIA . They also misguided me about A2DP which is bluetooth standard; however I told them beforeI wanna buy wired earphones.

They give distributor/dealers of Sony products number. What the fuck do they know about technical issues .Those ask me to go to their Sony centre and he will check with some . He dint confirm whether he will replcae "If the earphones I chose after unpacking wont work" in front him only

Sony customer support centre people also wouldnt help telling specifications of their own products .(Even though I had some choices for which they had to tell just 'Yes' or 'No' : for it would be supported or not)Damn it.

I never wasted so much time finding a product . Even its not sure.

I've had the same problem. I assume you're using the L-shaped cable? It doesn't work because the 3.5mm jack is smaller compared to any other regular jack. I compared the size between my Sony ZX300 and my Beats Solo HD's and noticed how the Beats cable was smaller. The way around this is by buying the straight cable.
I blame Sony for building such a small headphone socket :L
