I see a lot of people have had this problem but the advice they get is try a different port or restart the phone and pc but this is something simple people try before contacting you.

When i connect my xperia s to my laptop the phone noes its connected to the pc but nothing happens on the laptop or on the sony software. I no the usb is connect because the phone is charging. When i do a manually search it makes me wait for 10 min and then tells me to restart my phone and try again. i have tired the phone in a windows 7 pc aswell and the same thing happens. I am really stuck and it is really annoying that theres no other way to put large files on my device :-@ . Any help is appreciated Thank you

I am having the same issue. I can't seem to connect. Especially after updating the Sony PC Companion to the latest version. Before I updated to v2.10.053, i was able to connect and transfer files & backup the device. Now after updating, the PC Companion is not detecting my device. Keep asking me to reboot my phone and try again. I've already tried rebooting my phone and my PC too. Still the same. I know there's nothing wrong with the USB drive bcos my phone is getting charged when I connect it to the USB port. I've also checked the connection settings and it is by default set to MTP. Anyway, on this phone, that's the only option available. No other options to select. Right now, I'm trying to uninstall and reinstall the Sony PC Companion. Not sure if it's gonna help but just trying my luck. What do you I do next if this doesn't work?

Hi Johan i have tried the clearing data it is helpful as the phone now comes up on my pc up when i go to my computer > xperia s > then it is blank. but this is only after the first time i clean the Mtpapp data. If i try it again it keeps me waiting saying Phone preparation "please wait for your phone to connect to your computer. This can take several minutes, especially if you have a lot of content on your phone." Then nothing happens even after 30 minutes. Any advice on what to do next Johan?

Did you try using another USB cable?

Do you have a lot of files or large files stored on the phone? I don't know if it could have anything to do with that but you could try to clear the internal storage then connect the phone again. Maybe it's something stored on the internal storage that causes this problem.

I am having the same problems as Ikky24786 and several others. Before you ask I have tried; using a different usb socket; different operating system; removing all previously installed files from the phone; clearing MTP ( as others state - blank box, no access); uninstalling/reinstalling pc companion; trying to roll back to an earlier version (as you know companion updates itself before it allows you to do anything after which no phone detected); no connection through companion wifi either. Haven't tried a manufacturers reset yet but seeing as I can't backup my contacts and paid apps to my computer I am loathe to do this just yet.

Anything more helpful than advice already given would be a bonus.

I have a suggestion that hopefully could help you guys. I made a step by step guide below. Let me know if you still can't get connection after trying this.

Before beginning make sure that you have the latest versions of your Windows updates and Windows Media Player.

1. Begin by turning off USB debugging if it's enabled.

Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging

2. Clear data for the MTPapp in the phone.

Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All > Mtpapp

3. Connect your phone via USB and go to the Device manager on your computer. Check if you can locate your phone or any Unknown/New device that could be your phone or if you perhaps see the phone as an device. Right click it and select to uninstall.

4. Still in Device manager open the list for USB controllers (Universal Serial Bus Controllers) and right click each one of these controllers and select to uninstall.

5. Go to the control panel and Add/ remove programs. Select Add/ remove Windows components. Check Windows Media Player and next. Finish this guide.

When all of this is done reboot your computer and before connecting your phone again repeat step 2.

You should of course not have to do this every time you connect your phone to your computer but hopefully this could remove any error causing your phone not to connect properly.

Let me know if this works or not.

i think its more of a compatibility issue with the pc's OS or particular versions of that OS with the phone's current build. i have the same problem(my laptop can only detect the phone as a camera, windows xp). pc companion can't detect it either. interestingly my friends pc(win 7) detects it both as a drive and through pc companion. nothing seems to be wrong with the device. need help. anyone with a proper solution?
