That method is for unlocked boot loaders.

Currently there is no way to root on 4.0.4 with locked bootloaders. But we will have ways to root on locked bootloaders soon. Just keep waiting.

Hmmm? Did not get you.

You can root without unlocking bootloader using exploits. Some way developers find out to acess protected files (Example: We have the ZergRush exploit to root GB .58).

But the companies, in their next updates keep adding layers of protection due to which the exploits do not work (Example: the .62 firmware disabled the ZergRush exploit).

Similarly, for the 4.0.4 there is currently no way to root locked bootloaders.

All this I think. Correct me if I am wrong.

Right! Or at least more or less.

That's the traditional way that it happens on majority systems. But maybe we can have a (almost) definitely root solution for Android sometime. I hope!

Just as an example on Symbian it was always, for years, the traditional way. But some time ago they did complicated everyone's life by releasing unhackable firmwares/certificates. With tied hands hackers' come up with the very simplest solution to hack Symbian definitely: use an app that legaly has all the rights to access inner system files to do their job.

Well on Symbian what hackers have done was to trick antivirus apps that have quarantine feature. The antivirus apps have (by design) acess to system files, so hackers have just made (modded) those apps to act as previously system files (the hack files!) were quarantined. Then we just install the modded antivirus and ask to remove files out of quarantine....antivirus app will move hack files to system folders.

Maybe something similar can be done with Android. Maybe also with antivirus apps or any other powerful app that has legal deep system access. Let's see.

Here is how I rooted 4.0.4 with 1 click solution which worked with 4.0.3… with locked bootloader.

This is not my idea but somebody from XDA (Originally Posted by shantusingh) so credit goes to him.

Used flashtool 8.0.0
Used ARC S Generic ICS 4.0.4 with nr. LT18i_4.1.B.0.431_(1254-2184).ftf (minimal bloatware maybe 4-5 apps easily un installable or blocked)

From what I understand is that ICS 4.0.4 uses exact the some kernel as 4.0.3 so when flashing 4.0.4 I just disabled kernel update as shantusingh suggested and after flashing new ICS 4.0.4 – 1click method works without slightest problems.

What I did… first I just flashed the whole 4.0.4 just to see how it performs… after playing around I again re-flashed to generic Nordic 4.0.3… with this options checked in flashtool: WIPE DATA, WIPE CACHE, WIPE APPS LOG, NO FINAL VERIFICATION.

Turned on phone – checked if all went good… was on 4.0.3….

Again started flashing 4.0.4 with these options: WIPE DATA, WIPE CACHE, WIPE APPS LOG, EXCLUDE KERNEL, NO FINAL VERIFICATION.

All went fine… phone got updated to new ICS with old/the some kernel intact from ICS 4.0.3 then I run the bat file with 1-click rooting solution – all went smooth, so I have rooted ICS 4.0.4…

ICS performs nice and fast – one thing I noticed is speed and smoothness – there is no need to run SUS after flashtool as it took place after flashing 4.0.3.

Of course the method I use might void guarantee so use it with care or wait for your SI nr to be available. (Mine never showed up even in old 4.0.3 update list – ha)

Maybe try lower flashtool as the guy used 6.8 and I used 8, really dont know... did u use right ftf for ur phone? there are few floating around for diff phones, I have Arc S.

You need to flash the 4.0.4 ftf first.

Then Flash the kernel from 4.0.3

Then root using the script, either One Click or Doomlord kit.

Then Flash back the 4.0.4 kernel.

The root will stay in this way.

And it is for Locked Bootloader.
