Problem sending SMS messages

Hello,

For a couple weeks my Xperia X10i has a problem sending SMS messages.

When I try to send a message the status is constantly "Sending" and, of course, the message is never sent to the recipient. However, if I take the battery out of the phone, remove the SIM card and put it back again and start the phone, I am able to send messages normally, but for a limited amount of time (for a couple hours or so). After that, I have to do that again and again.

I contacted my carrier and they told me that it could be a problem with my SIM card, as it was old (5-year-old), so I bought a new one before an hour, but the problem remains.

I would really appreciate a quick response, as it's very tiring and time-wasting to take the SIM card out and replace it 5 or 6 times a day.

Could an application cause a problem like this?

Some notes:

1) The SMS Centre number is right.

2) The phone software is the latest one.

3) System specifications:

Android version: 2.3
Baseband version: 2.1.71

you probably have a LOT of sms/mms messages on your messaging app. if you don't mind losing them then delete them all then and your apps do a factory reset

settings -> privacy -> factory reset

How to install it

You need to

go to settings -> applications -> check unknown sources

download IO File Manager

download the backup & restore app, transfer it to your SD card, use OI file manager to find it -> tap on it -> install it

Contacts

just to play it safe sync your contacts w/ google if you haven't already

open your phonebook

press MENU button -> tap on Send Contacts -> select all -> send it to your email

on your computer

-> download the file -> go to your gmail -> click on contacts -> click on more actions -> on the drop down menu click on "import" -> choose the file -> and click import

Apps

Don't worry so much about backing up your apps

on your computer go to

market.android.com -> log in -> click on My Library -> and send all your apps to your phone

SMS/MMS

if you don't want to use the backup & restore app then

Install "backup SMS" to back up your SMS and MMS to your Gmail

First of all, thank you for your direct and very detailed answer.

The truth is that I have about 9.000 messages (Sent / Received), but I would really like to keep them...

I have already uploaded many of them to Gmail (before updating to Gingerbread). However, many times I need to search for a message that I have sent/received e.g. last year, so that's why I prefer to keep them at my phone.

I forgot to mention that I use the default messaging app and not any other third-party app (the deafult is better than any other I've used, in my opinion).

I would like to wait a bit, in case other ideas arrive in the discussion. Although, if reseting the phone is the final solution, I'm afraid that I won't avoid it.

well the X10 has that issue, that if you have a LOT of sms/mms on your messaging app, it will trigger this issue, trust me, I have that problem, if you use

backup SMS+ you can look for the message on your gmail, it will sync date, time, contact etc. a bit faster to look for the message than on the phone

Well, I download SMS Backup+, but I will back up my messages some other time, because it takes some time to complete.

In addition, I downloaded Go SMS Pro and I have to admit that it has much more features than the default Messaging app.

Now, with the new SIM, the problem goes just with a phone restart. Maybe, as you said, due to many messages the memory is full and it cannot handle more, but after a restart the memory cleans up.

you should check

Handcent SMS as well it's great

as long as you have a lot of SMS/MMS you will have to deal with lag and crashing problems

I had tried Handcent SMS, but I didn't like it too much, although I've read thousands of good reviews.

Firstly, I'll try to delete some hundreds of messages from people I don't contact a lot, in order to see if it's working. If I see even a minor change, I'll just delete them all.
