hm...

...We particularly like the XPERIA Ray's tactile power/lock key on top of the phone, along with the large home button below the screen. In a nice touch, the light around the top of the home button illuminates — it's white when the screen is on, pulses red when the battery falls below 20 per cent, and flashes green when you have a missed call or new text message. Its unfortunate that this light couldn't be extended to the back and home buttons that sit on either side of the home key: they aren't backlit, and are hard to see at night...

link:

http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/mobile_phones/sony_ericsson/xperia_ray/392408

I have just bought the Ray and I find the back, option and home key light up when the lighting is low. I tried covering the sensor to see if it turns on, but didn't. I want to know if the phone comes like this or not? If no, what can I do to fix this error?

Thanks

Based on the information I have currently available, this is normal behavior of the handset.

thank you for your reply. I was not clear earlier. The backlight of the three keys at the bottom of the phone didn't work from the day i bought it. Assuming a software problem, I had updated the phone and yet backlight of the keys don't work. I don't think this is a sensor problem as it is a new phone.

@Sam: You said that is the normal behavior of the phone. Are you suggesting the backlight(for back, home and option keys) for Ray is not there? If so, how can one use the phone in low-light conditions?

I am planning to go to the service center and getting the phone a new software. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

I’m sorry it appears I misunderstood your first post. The keys should indeed light up and if you have tried an update to resolve the problem with no luck I would have to advise repair.
