Only just seen this query but my answer would be to use HandCent Sms, cool free app from market and hugely customisable with notification sound being one of them.

Also use app called Quick Settings which gives you surprise surprise quick access to your settings. You can select volume and it gives you the volume levels for things like ringer/notification/media/alarm etc on one screen. That might help too.

Im having the same problem and might just try that.

I've done a Software Update + Factory Reset to no avail.

A phone that just doesn't ring/vibrate for incoming SMSes is ridiculous. Even if this HandCent and Quick Settings work, I'm thinking of going back to the Sony Centre to get some answers.

I am thinking of trying to return the handset if this problem continues!

What about the quick settings app? Is you notification volume turned right up? Cos quick settings allows you to have a seperate volume just for notifications whereas the stock settings I think only allows one setting.

Assuming that you get sound notificiations for everything else - like sd card loading / unloading when you connect to PC?

There is a secret menu thing accessible from the lock screen (dont swipe to open).... Menu,Back,Back,Menu,Back, Menu, Menu,Back. It gives you access to test things. Not sure if it would help but hey ho, when you get desperate you'll try anything.

Hi all..I am thrilled to say - I have a ringtone for my sms's!! Problem is, I'm not sure which of my 2 'fixes' did the job. I downloaded the app 'Quick settings' (as per Suze's advice) and adjusted all the volumes on that, but also did a software update (given the amount of time it took to download all the new updates, I perhaps should do this more often!). Thanks for the help and advice...hope this helps all of you too!

Just for the sake of anyone searching, it IS possible to set different volumes for ringtones and notifications for texts and so on. Go to Settings - Sound & display - Ringer volume. From that screen, you can choose tio 'use incoming call for notifications', or, if you remove the tick from that box, you can use the on-screen slider to set a separate 'Notification volume'. If you're holding the phone sideways, you will have to scroll down to get the notification volume slider.
