GPS problem- Problem Fixed.

Recently, i found my GPS didn't work. i connect SK17i with mobile network and use google map.The best result is 1400m range.It doesn't matter how long you stay outdoor, the GPS icon always twinke and couldn't find any sattelite. But in the same position and same phone setting when i use LT18i, it found sattelite in 10 second. Is it possible to solve this or not? Firmware problem?

Hmm... Did you also enable the use of satellites, or only mobile networks?

Hi All,

First of all I want to thank you all for the information that we've received. Right now I think that we have all the information that we need to solve the problem.

I'll try to explain more about what is causing this so that you can find ways of avoiding it while wating for it to be fully solved.

There are certain information that the GPS receiver needs to function optimally:

1. GPS time (which is known if you have a GPS fix)

2. Rough location estimate (which is known if you have a GPS fix)

3. Detailed information about satellite orbits called Ephemeris (which is decoded from each satellite above the horizon and takes about 30 seconds per satellite)

4. Rough information about satellite orbits called Almanac (which only needs to be decoded from one satellite and takes about 12 minutes)

To get this information quicker than decoding if from the satellites we try to download it from a server over the Internet.

Every 5 minutes the GPS receiver checks if any information is missing. Even if you have a GPS fix the almanac might be missing and a connection attempt will be triggered.

So what you should do is to make sure that you already have all the info that the GPS receiver might need.

One way of doing so is to let the GPS receiver run for about 20 minutes in good signal conditions to decode the Ephemeris and Almanac from the satellites.

An other way of doing it is to download the data from the server while on WiFi connection. When the data downloaded from the server becomes stale you will need to decode it from the satellites or update it over a WiFi connection or you will start loosing the GPS fix again.

To force the data to be downloaded you should install an application that calls the LocationManager.sendExtraCommand("gps", "force_xtra_injection", null) method while on a WiFi network.

i read this thread again carefully.

What news for my Mini Pro were:

I did all as Oskar said, but nothing happened. My phone still can't fix any satellite.

So I thought that might be some problem of Android 2.3. I wait for the Android 4.0. Two week ago, I updated the phone to 4.0. My phone still can’t fix any satellite.

So I thought that really be hardware problem. The day before yesterday, I brought my Mini Pro to the service center HK. They check and told me the hardware is fine and revert my phone back to 2.3 version of Android. My phone still can’t fix any satellite.

Hello, News for my phone.

I sent my phone to Service Centre just now.

The stuff even not know what is A-GPS and GPS. I nearly argue with the stuff.

Now my phone is under checking. Just wait and see what will happen?

Dear All, guess what happen?

Yesterday, i took my sk17i back and what the service centre had done were same as last time i sent my phone to them: reload the S.W.(software) and check hardware. Thay said both software and hardware are OK for my phone.

Please see this:

They reloaded the software and check hardware first time i sent my phone to them. And after that, I took at least three hour outdoor to check if the GPS is fine. But the result is failed. So i resent the phone to them, and compliamed same thing said my GPS never work! They did same thing. Do you think what they do were rediculus?

The stuff told me, they have done all what they should do: a) check the software; b) check the hardware. The resault were all OK. I think they should be thank for their duty work and i thank them.

Infering to what the stuff have said, i think the problem is from the Sony ( Ericson) core technical support. They didn't solve the problem of the capacity of the Android system and they own hardware. They sold product with defects!

Let's get to the point.

I get no time to check how is the GPS now. But will revert to you all as soon as i check.

I am hoping surprise that it works.

May Sony and i will bring you all surprise!
