Xperia xa's dialler app hangs when making or answering a call

The dialler app often hangs when trying to call someone or trying to answer an incoming call. Otherwise the phone still works fine. Just the dialler app is not responding. I know to phones with the same problem (my girlfriends and my aunts). Is there any way to reinstall the dialler app? Hard reset did not help.

Hi @Pete-fin, welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing this with your phone. You can reset your phone app if you go to: Settings > Apps > Phone > Storage > Clear data > Ok. Note that this does not delete any saved contacts or call lists. Then restart you phone and see if it behaves the same way.

If it does I'd recommend that you try and reboot your phone to safe mode to see if this behavior is caused by one of you downloaded app as these will be temporary disable in this mode.

We have done this now. In safemode this problem did not occur. We tried to remove whatsapp. That did not help. Problem still exists. About 1 out of 4 calls cause the caller app to freeze. When the app freezes other apps work fine, but in order to make a call the phone needs to be restarted.

I just tested the phone and found out that the app itself does not freeze. It is the call that freezes. There is no sound in the call and if you hang up it keeps hanging up the call for ages. Eventually the call ends and it is again possible to make a call. It takes about 5 minutes for the call to end.

If it's working correctly in safe mode, the behavior with your phones dialer app is most likely due to one of your downloaded apps.

I'm afraid it's very difficult for me to say what app may be causing this behavior but I recommend that you make sure that all of your downloaded apps are updated to their latest versions. You can update your apps if you go to: Google Play store > Tap the 3 vertical lines > My apps & games > Update all.

If you are still experiencing the same behavior with all your apps updated, I recommend that you uninstall apps, starting with the most recently installed, until you find the one/ones causing this behavior.

We are not sure if it would not occur in safe mode because it does not happen every time. But it did not happen when we tried safemode for a couple of days. We did unistall almost every app that can be uninstalled, but that did not help. All apps have been updated regularly.
