Group messaging

I have been recieving messages from separate contacts as individual text messages, but they’re meant to be in group messages. I am also unable to send group messages. Is there any way to activate a group message feature? Or are there any recommendations for third party apps which support group text messaging?

Does your phone have the standard firmware for your country installed? For instance, I am located in the US, and if I don't have the official US firmware installed then I no longer have access to true group messaging. I can send a single message to a number of contacts, but any replies are sent just to me. There are also restrictions on attaching images to messages. These problems disappear if I have the US firmware installed. This applies to the AT&T network (and MVOs), but it might also apply to T-Mobile.
