Assuming you have the latest software update (Android Oreo), you will find the OS details in Settings > System > Phone info

It seems as though I don't have Oreo, because I can't find Phone under System. How do I find it out if I don't have that?

I don't have About Phone under Settings.

Open settings, on the top right corner do you see a magnifying glass? If yes, then tap on it and write the word about. Does about phone appear?

What info are you looking for? If you tap on the "about phone" found through search, you will find details about Android version, kernel, security patch, build number etc. OS is the Android version.
