Camera not working after 2.3 gingerbread update

I recently got my x10i from a friend who had never updated it from the original 1.6 android version that it came with, so i have updated to the recent gingerbread update. The problem is that since the update, the buil in camera app will open, but as soon as i press the shutter button (or use the touch function) to take a picture it hangs and won't do anything until i exit. All the while it is hanging it is actively displaying whatever i point it at, but it won't take a picture. The annoying thing is that other camera apps such as camera360 work fine and will take photos, but i want to be able to use the face recognition and video functionality of the built in app. Any ideas?

I suggest trying the following.

Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All > Camera > Clear Data.

If the above does not work try performing a Factory Data Reset as this will reload the software on the phone,

Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset ( Note: this will remove all data from the handset but will not touch a memory stick or SIM card)

Thanks mate that one's been getting on my nerves, cleared the data and it works fine now! i'm completely new to android so excuse me if it was an obvious one lol

tried it, complains about there being no sd card and wont take pictures, but it works when i put the sd card back in. out of interest how do i make it save the pics to the phone memory instead of the sd?

It is not possible to save pictures to the phone's memory when using an (Android)Xperia based handset other then what Uliwooly has suggested.

ok the same problem has started up again, only now clearing the data doesnt work and the factory reset hasnt worked either. is there a way of making the camera button start the camera360 app instead of the built in one?

I don't know of a way of making a different app open by pressing the camera shutter button. You could add a shortcut to the homescreen for your preferred app by going to your list of apps and long-pressing that app till it appears on the home screen, or by long-pressing on the homescreen, selecting shortcuts, applications and then selecting the app you want.

...and you then, if you like, drag the camera icon in to the media folder, which appears by default on all five bits of the homescreen, and you would then not need to scroll to a particular part of the homescreen. Or even replace one of the four things at the bottom of the screen with your camera app.

thanks, ive done what you suggested and it works, but it would be a lot better if the built in camera would just work or if i could re map the camera shutter button

Well,my camera still is not working,after all these things.....Can i bring back my original software?That can fix the problem??I give all my money for phone and now we ruined all with official version...My god,what to do??Can someone help us??

For still pics no problem, video shuts down phone after a min or so. Any soluions!!!!.

FYI, clear data didnot help.

Here is the solution that worked for me:

1. I rooted the phone.

2. Install app 'system tuner'.

3. Increased SD cache size from 128 to 1024 (KB/MB not known).

All back to normal.

Problem, above step 3 needs to be done after every reboot, trying to figure which system file needs to modified.

i'm not keen on the idea of rooting mine though, was just hoping for a fix/update to sort it out. and to top it off my gallery won't show any images, i've tried clearing the data and still no luck, it hangs witht the message "Loading new albums and photos". is there any news on a proper update coming from sony ericsson? because this gingerbread seems to be nothing but trouble on the x10... 😕
