Problems with upgrading PC Companion

I have installed PC Companion and every time I start it, it immediately wants to upgrade to a newer version. The upgrade runs for some time then returns a "installation error" message - yes, I know, not very precise.

I have been in contact with Sony's Customer Service, who suggested a number of things, none of them worked. So I'm reaching out here in the hopes that someone can help, as I'm not able to make full use of the phone without PC Companion.

Customer Service asked me to reboot my machine, did that, uninstall PC Companion, did that, re-install PC Companion, did that too, run Update Service, did that. None of the suggestions have worked, and as I said, there seems no way to skip the upgrade requirement.

What windows are you using?You say you also tried Sony update service?

I downloaded the latest version of Update Service, re-installed PC Companion, and all of a sudden it worked. Thanks.
