Hi all,

I have upgraded my Arc LT15a phone from Gingerbread 2.3.4 to ICS 4.1.B.0.431, and since then have not been able to access the card from my Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit edition PC using Mass Storage Mode.

Here are the facts I have been able to gather:

- SD card in the phone works just fine

- MTP mode works just fine, but is slow, so I don't want to use it.

- Mass storage (MSC) mode does not work, which is my actual problem

- Tried rebooting the phone, but it makes no difference

- Tried deleting the USB drivers on my PC and rebooting, makes no difference

- Tried uninstalling and re-installing PC companion, which also makes no difference

- It works just fine on my old Windows XP machine. The drive became visible in MSC mode immediately.

Does anybody have any bright ideas as to what is going on, or what sequence of actions i need to take to resolve the issue? My best guess is that it's a problem with the drivers under Windows 7, but re-installing them all doesn't appear to have resolved the issue.

Any help with specific instructions would be much appreciated, as would any replies that don't say "Just use MTP instead".

Thanks a lot!

Ben

Hi Slimshaddy,

Firstly, thanks for your help! Unfortunately this did not resolve my problem.

Here is the latest info I can give you:

- Reinstalled PC companion

- Installed update service

- Uninstalled and re-installed USB drivers

- Hard reboot of phone (power off, battery out, battery in, power on)

- Still works fine in MTP mode but not MSC mode.

None of this appears to work. The phone works fine in every other PC I have put it into, without having to install any other software. I can see and read/write to the SD card as normal on those PCs.

I have added some screen shots below that hopefully give some more information:

1. Disk (SD card) visible, but FAT32 partition not visible:

2. Drivers claim to be installed:

3. LT15a device appears to be visible:

4. Cannot see device in task bar:

Any further info or assistance you could give me would be much appreciated.

Ben

PS I also followed the instructions you posted here:

http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/31111

However, it wasn't clear which button you wanted the user to hold when connecting the phone. It made no difference to me anyway 😕

Ben

Hi again,

I've finally fixed it! I had to uninstall my drivers again. However Windows doesn't *really* uninstall drivers and actually clean up after itself. So I did some research, and used the tool at the following link:

http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/usb-drive-or-flash-problems-how-to-cleanup-and-remove-old-usb-storage-drivers.145884/

These were the steps I followed:

1. Uninstall drivers for the phone "the usual way"

2. Run the utility from the link above

3. Reboot the PC

4. Reconnect phone

5. I can access my SD card again!

I really appreciate your effort in trying to help troubleshoot this problem. However it would be great to make it clear that you do not need to install PC companion or the update service to access the contents of the phone in either MSC or MTP mode.

Have a good Thursday!

Ben

I had the same thing happen after I upgraded to ICS. I did this to solve it:

Disconnect the phone from the computer;

Go to Settings > Xperia > Connectivity > USB Connection Mode

Choose Mass Storage Mode.

Then connect to the computer using USB and it would work as a Mass Storage Device.
