Safe to attempt to update the software?

I've just purchased a new SE Xperia pro ( factory unlocked ). However, for some reason the supplier has advised against attempting to update the software. I'm not in a hurry to do so, but would like to know why they might have advised that and are there any steps I can take to a) avoid the phone updating itself and b) if I should want to try an update is there a way to downgrade if it doesn't work?

I'm in the UK and will be using this phone with T-mobile network.

well first you should ask him what he fears if you update.. i mean what does he think will happen if you update..??

i don;t think there should be any problem..

however , connect your phone to your pc , a pop up will appear , click yes and install pc companion and after installiion make sure it recognises your phone , after downloading it should automatically recognise the phone...

Hi, just wondering .... where did you buy the phone? It is worthwhile to check if the bootloader is still locked.

Not sure how to check the bootloader without connecting to SDK etc. but it boots completely normal.

Basically I hope that an update to that phone won't turn it into an expensive brick.

The Xperia pro seems to be an abandoned child of SE, so there probably aren't any updates other than crucial bug fixes anyway. Or are there?

its upto you , there is 0.1 % of getting the phone bricked while updatig , if there are no problems like wifi dis-coonect and stable electricity , phone will not get bricked , however its upto you if you want to update or not..

OK, I'm fine with the normal risks... was just wondering if there was some particular extra risk with this model. Especially since in never really launched well in the UK.

EDIT: They've just responded to my question. Basically it's a message they now routinely apply to their shipments, because they were having several customers messing up the upgrades by disconnecting midstream.

From your edited reply above, guess I do not need to answer this, probably bootloader is still locked. Anyway, the easiest way to find out is to plug phone to PC Companion.

so thats why they told you not to update , well its better to listen to them

but do ask them for the coming ICS update due in march \ april , it will have a complete new User Interface and features..

so do ask them..

yes all 2011 phones will run ICS

Good to hear. Really strange how hard it is to get the Xperia pro in the UK... I'm the only person I know that has one; but its probably the best Android phone with a keyboard, especially when it was first announced.

i waited for the xperia neo for 5 months but i had to buy a phone so got mysled an arc , yes i understand what you feel owning a device that you really wanted

You are not the only one in the UK with this phone, but you are right, it was really hard to get hold of, Sony didn't really want to promote this phone for some strange reason, but if you are looking for a phone with a full qwerty keybaord, this is the best out there.
