Happened to me, it's frustrating but can be fixed. Keep pressing OK while you go in settings, apps, search for the app phone also between system apps, scroll quickly and identify the process. Tap on it and do a force stop, clear data and cache then reboot your phone.

It's a frustrating process that can accomplish a goal.

This does not delete personal data, it does, however, remove some cached data, such as login details for Facebook and apps the like. So you will need to log back into some applications.

The Safe mode boot can be done when the phone is powered of as well, this is documented in the link I supplied.

Good luck.

I had to ring the 1300 number, the alert every second made it so difficult to do anything about the problem! Safe mode alone wasn't enough, had to go online to get repair done, which took a lot longer than the 10 minutes I was told. Yet to find out what I have lost, especially of messaging on apps etc.

Sorry to hear that, the software repair process is generally around 15 to 30 minutes, it really depends on your internet connection. You are able to perform a backup prior to the software repair, this is what Xperia Companion offers, however, it may not have been feasible given the state of the device.
